Our work in 2011-2013

The Trust, over the next two years, will be collaborating with partners and stakeholders on key areas of work.  These are:

Empowering Parents and Carers

The Dyslexia-SpLD Trust is supporting a collaborative project, 'Empowering Parents and Carers' providing valuable information, resources and support services for parents and carers. It has brought together Dyslexia Action, The British Dyslexia Association, The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre and Springboard for Children to share their expertise. For further information click here.

Implementation of a Professional Development Framework to support the education workforce

We will be working with our strategic partners to embed the use of this tool, so that it informs and leads to actions which ensure that the additional requirements to support dyslexic students are in place across schools and Local Authorities.  We will also be working with other partners involved in the designing and delivering training to the education workforce to assure links with the Framework.  These includes HEIs, awarding bodies, TDA, other VCS bodies participating in developing and delivering training relevant to SEN.

To use this free and comprehensive tool please see our Professional Development Framework section.

Supporting Literacy through transition from Primary to Secondary School

A Springboard for Children project which will achieve:

  • Improved levels of literacy for tutored pupils.
  • Improved parent/carer ability to support their children.
  • Increased participation and improved skill levels of volunteers, including volunteers from the school community.
  • Development of a sustainable model and increased access to high quality support.

Children Will Shine

A British Dyslexia Association project, Children Will Shine will provide support for children with literacy difficulties through out-of-school workshops, using tried and tested literacy materials.  the workshops are run in deprived inner-city areas working with Parent Partnership services and local authorities.

Liverpool and Manchester Youth Intervention Programme

A British Dyslexia Association project which will work across a number of Children's Services teams and schools within Liverpool and Manchester to support young people with dyslexia who have drifted into offending behaviour.

This project aims to support these young people across a number of agencies to enable them to re-engage positively and also support their literacy skills.

BDA Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark for Schools

The Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark for schools provides a framework of good practice in teaching and learning with an integrated, whole school approach.  The criteria set within the model aims to improve standards for all children, not just dyslexic pupils.

Clear benefits of the process include increased self-esteem and motivation of dyslexic children, raised staff expectation of pupil's capabilities and better understanding from children toward dyslexia.

Providing professional guidance to schools and advice to parents

We will be developing our parent and schools networks to provide valuable
information in the community as well as working across the sector to develop evidence based policies.

Through collaboration we can provide a consensus opinion to feed back to government on the issues that affect our children and young people with dyslexia.  We are working with The Autism Education Trust, The Communication Trust and our colleagues across the board of SEN including NASEN, SSAT, Senjit and the Council for Disabled Children to improve outcomes for our children and young people with SEN.

Please see our stakeholder section.

Supporting national and smaller organisations to develop their high quality services and to encourage prolonged sustainability.

It is our aim to improve parental and school workforce choice and to engage with smaller as well as larger organisations committed to improving the lives of dyslexic people.  If you are engaged in work that demonstrates excellent practice, we would be keen to link with you in our projects of national significance.
